There are still many organizations that conduct business via fax, regardless of how outdated the technology may seem. Fax machines or computer fax modems are not necessary, however. You can send faxes from your computer and receive them by email using free online fax services.

Note: These free fax services may have limited features. Make sure you read carefully before making a decision.

1: FaxZero

What We Like

• Great for very limited faxing needs.
• Faxes straight from Word files.

What We Don’t Like

• Limited free offering.
• Includes ads on the cover page.
• No way to receive a fax.

FaxZero allows you to send a fax free of charge across the United States and Canada, and to many foreign destinations as well. Faxes can be sent by uploading documents or PDF files or by typing text. However, there is no fax-receiving function.

In addition to placing an advertisement on the cover page, the free service allows you to send up to five free faxes per day and a maximum of three pages per fax. For $2.09, you can send a fax with priority delivery and no advertising on the cover page if you need to send more than three pages. The Better Business Bureau has accredited this service.

2: GotFreeFax

What We Like

• No branding or ads.
• Reasonable fee structure.

What We Don’t Like

• Very limited number of free faxes.
• No ability to receive faxes.

GotFreeFax offers no ads on its cover page. No ads are placed on GotFreeFax’s free fax cover pages, and your fax is not branded with GotFreeFax. You can send faxes online anywhere in the United States and Canada. There is no fax-receiving functionality, as with FaxZero.

The daily limit is two free faxes per person, with three pages per fax allowed. It costs 98 cents to fax up to three pages, but GotFreeFax lets you send up to 10 pages for $1.98, 20 pages for $2.98, or 30 pages for $4.98. It also provides priority delivery and uses an encrypted connection.

3: FaxBetter Free

You can receive up to 50 pages per month with FaxBetter Free’s dedicated toll-free fax number. Every time you receive a fax, you’ll receive an email notification. Online access to your faxes is available through FaxBetter Free for up to 1,000 pages.

Using this free fax number is not possible, and the fax-to-email and OCR/searchable fax features are only free for the first 30 days. The free version will also display browser ads.

A FaxBetter Premium account starts at $5.95 per month for up to 500 pages per month, and two cents per page after that (albeit this plan requires you to pay upfront for two years). Free fax numbers are provided by eFax for incoming and outgoing faxes. Fax can be sent and received from your email program, or faxes can be sent and received online (the online portal even lets you sign faxes). The trial allows you to send and receive 150 documents.

After your trial ends, you can upgrade to the Plus plan ($15.83 per month billed annually) or Pro plan ($24.99 per month billed annually) and send and receive faxes using the eFax app on your mobile device. The online portal will also allow you to access all your faxes.

You will be able to change the area code for your fax number and receive up to 375 pages (Pro) or 170 pages (Plus) per month when you sign up for a Pro or Plus plan. The setup fee for either plan is $10.
